TX House: Laundry Room Update

***Originally posted on cregarstyle on August 13, 2014***

The laundry room was the first room my wonderful husband let me touch when we first bought the house.  As a reminder, here is what our laundry room looked like when the house was purchased.  It was your basic, beige laundry room with a nice wooden shelf.

Aaron had originally said that we needed to wait 6 months after buying the house before painting anything.  All that changed one day when he opened the door and accidentally dented the wall behind the door with the doorknob.  I patched the dent so it was even with the rest of the wall but since my plaster was white and our wall was beige I took it as an invitation to paint the room.  While Aaron was at work I headed to our local Home Depot store and picked out some paint I liked.  In hindsight I probably should have asked him what color he liked since it was his house (not mine) and he had only lived there for less than a month.  However, I figured if I was going to fix it I would pick the color as long as it wasn't overly girly.

I settled on a beachy blue that I thought would make the white washer and dryer pop and look nice around the white trim.  That day, all while he was at work I painted the whole laundry room myself and boy was he surprised when he came home to a fixed wall and a painted room!

Next, I decided I didn't like looking at my cluttered laundry shelf.  So naturally I took to pinterest to find lots of fabulous laundry rooms with gorgeous cabinetry to hide the detergent.  Seeing as I am a Stay at Home Wife (and momma to our puppy) and a full time student, cabinetry was out of the budget.  I decided that I would hang some curtains to hide the shelf.  I purchased a tension rod and some basic white curtains put those up.  This is what they looked like with the paint.

Our laundry room is pretty shallow so I can't get a straight on picture of the curtains, but you get the idea.  Now I am sad to say the curtains stayed like this for a long while, longer than I care to admit.  But then the glorious day came when Aaron bought me my first sewing machine for my birthday this summer and this was going to be my first project!  I practiced using my machine for about a week before tackling the hemming of the curtains but thankfully it was a pretty simple project and I think they turned out FABULOUS (if I do say so myself)!

Having the shorter curtains that end just below the shelf makes it look so sleek and allows us to see the great blue wall color instead of just a wall of white.  This room isn't quite finished as we are considering the idea of building a middle section to go between the washer and dryer to prevent socks and other clothes from slipping between them and we are going to add a second shelf above the current one for additional storage.  I will update on those once we get to that part.  But otherwise we added a hook we got from some friends as a wedding present to the wall opposite the shelf to hold our little girl's supplies and we are finished!

The wall is the same color as the rest of the room, but it looks different in the photo

Finally "finishing" the laundry room feels great.  It will look even better once we add those last few pieces but is completely functional and aesthetically pleasing as is.  Until then...
